What We Do

Every community has a hidden potential that is worthwhile being discovered!

The CICSD education, health and community programmes is aim to strengthen personal, social and emotional development of young and old Nigerians and enable them to deal with challenges faced by growing up in communities most affected by violence, substance abuse and or HIV/AIDS. We are working in disadvantaged communities around states in Nigeria.

Having identified a desperate need to: alleviate poverty, educate and assist community, women and children on issues regarding health, gender based violence (GBV), education, social responsibility and HIV / AIDS in synergy with community development.

The following key priority areas have been identified in communities which have a devastating impact on the growth of poverty:

  • Poverty alleviation
  • Counseling for drug relating issues
  • Feeding schemes
  • Youth Development

It is on this background that the CICSD have executed various projects with the aim of achieving its objectives. One of these projects is the humanitarian assistance and feeding schemes for the IDP’s supported by individuals and businesses for the North-East communities ravaged by the insurgencies.

PROJECTS:

Teachers Development Support Programme

The Concerned Initiative for Community and Social Development, an organisation committed to social promotion and development is committed to enhancing the welfare and productivity of Teachers in Nigeria especially with priority to the retired teachers.

At CICSD, we observed that teaching is one of the oldest professions in the world but unfortunately, in Nigeria, teachers are regarded as the poorest in amongst other profession.

It however against this background that the Concerned Initiative is taking it upon itself to create an enabling platform with other relevant stakeholders to build opportunities for Teacher’s development in Nigeria.

Our focus areas shall include but not limited to:

  • The Teachers Development Summit that will identify and bring about the different stakeholders and key actors in the education sectors.
  • Basic education scholarship support programme for the teachers’ children.
  • Creating basic health support programmes and services for both retired and the active teachers.
  • Entrepreneurial support for retired teachers. This area would look at the start up business and other stipend to help the retirees.

Feeding Scheme

The majority of the IDPs is under-privileged and in desperate need for major attention in all facets mentioned above. Hence this area was identified as the pilot beneficiary area.

CICSD aim is to make a contribution towards reversing the cycle of poverty and in doing so address some of the massive socio economic challenges commonly associated with low income residential areas. With the assistance of private sector, CICSD conduct regular feeding programmes and prepare meals for IDPs. We wish that we could feed the North-East communities affected on a more frequent basis, but all our projects are done via sponsorship and a project-by-project basis.

This project is entirely dependent on private sector support. Since the take-off of the project, CICSD has distributed free food to community areas across the country.

Self Sufficiency and Crimes Mgt. Training Programmes

Sufficient research available proves that internally displaced who returned to communities with a high poverty rate, are more susceptible to abuse. In consideration of preventative measures and with the assistance of partner organizations, CICSD launched a course. The training was delivered to help them discover values and opportunities available in their communities. The response we had from the youth and women were amazing after completion of the course. They were more informed about their surroundings on alert and economy. Furthermore, attendees now had new ideas about how to control their emotions in dangerous situations, e.g. hijacking, bomb blast and robbery, etc.

From this initiative the ‘Blow the Whistle on Crime’ campaign was formed. The aim of this campaign was to get the communities to stand together and to speak with one voice against crime in communities. This campaign was very effective. Community members became more aware of their possessions as well as watch over their neighbours. They formed one common bond, safety for themselves and families.

A Proposed Establishment of Disease Control Centers (DCC) at the Grassroots and in Key Local Government Areas of the States in Nigeria

DCC is a proposed Disease Intelligence Service center to combat epidemics arising from numerous different human activities. To collaborates, to create the expertise, information, and tools that people and communities may need to protect their health through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury, disability, and preparedness for new health threats

Mission of DCC is to focus on transmitted diseases, malaria and others which can be controlled and be immunized against.

Training Health Workers on Emergency within Key Local Government Areas of the States in Nigeria

CICSD is to facilitate health workers training to integrate psychosocial and mental health support into emergency services.

Health Workers play a fundamental role in improving emergency response and recovery because of their latent efficiency in enhancing the overall health of their communities, increasing emergency preparedness, supplementing the efforts of emergency responders, and building relationships of trust among the people and victims.
